Seafood Choices Alliance, an international program of SeaWeb, is offering travel fellowships for media representatives to attend the 2009 Seafood Summit. The Summit is the largest event of its kind and brings together conservation organizations, scientists, government and industry representatives for frank and open discussions about the threats facing our ocean and the explicit link between the ocean’s health and the global health of the seafood industry.

About Seafood Summit: An annual event, the Seafood Summit brings together all parties interested in making the global seafood marketplace more sustainable. Now in its 7th year, this summit is internationally recognized as the forum that inspires productive dialogue between conservation groups, government officials and different sectors of the seafood industry, from retailers and suppliers to chefs and restaurateurs. Seafood Summit brings together global representatives with the goal of making the seafood marketplace environmentally, socially and economically sustainable. This year’s event will include panels, presentations and workshops on a variety of topics, including:

  • The Science of Sustainability
  • Catch Shares: A Primer
  • Sustainable Seafood in Japan – A Force in the Next Five Years?
  • Developing Confidence in Developing World Fishing and Aquaculture
  • Collective and Cooperative Efforts to Promote Responsible Fishing
  • Social Responsibility in Farmed Seafood
  • Sustaining Healthy Coastal Fishing Communities
  • Achieving Sustainable Harvests – Perspectives from Around the Globe
  • Marine Protected Areas and California’s Marine Life Protected Act

Application Process: Fellowship applications should be submitted to Seafood Choices Alliance by Friday, November 21, 2008 to Brian Cohen (click for link to email address) with “Fellowship Application” in the subject line. A limited number of fellowships are available; preference will be shown to applicants from under-represented and non-represented geographies. Fellowships, which will be applied to airfare and/or accommodation expenses, will be based on need, point of origin, and the ability of the individual or company represented to help defray costs. Interviews may be conducted to obtain additional information following application. Fellowship recipients will be announced early December 2008.

To apply, please submit the following (total application not to exceed three pages):

  • Brief CV or bio, including concise descriptions of key coverage as it relates to fisheries and ocean issues, the seafood industry, aquaculture, and/or food writing, with a focus on seafood.
  • Three clips or samples of coverage, especially any pieces relevant to the issues listed above. (freelancers should include a list of outlets that routinely publish your articles and provide contact information or letters of interest from two outlets that are interested in news from the symposium

Seafood Choices Alliance, an international program of SeaWeb, is offering travel fellowships for representatives from non-profit organizations to attend the 2009 Seafood Summit. At the 2009 Seafood Summit in San Diego, California from February 1 to 3, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in discussions, hear presentations, and network with conservation and business leaders from the seafood industry.

Now in its 7th year, this summit is internationally recognized as the forum that inspires productive dialogue between conservation groups, government officials and different sectors of the seafood industry, from retailers and suppliers to chefs and restaurateurs.
